Question: What is a Database ?

Answer:

Often a large amount of information may be stored on a computer which can be processed in a variety of ways. A database is a structured collection of data which can be managed to meet the needs of a community of users. The structure is achieved by organizing the data according to a database model.

For example, a supermarket will have the information stored on all the products it has on the shelves. This data is being continually updated and processed to analyse sales and replenish stock. This large amount of stored data is an example of a database.

Generally speaking, the concept of information is closely related to notions of constraint, communication, control, data, form, instruction, knowledge, meaning, mental stimulus, pattern, perception, and representation.
