Question: What is Scale Factor ?

Answer:

Maps and models are made to a fixed ratio of what they represent, known as the scale factor.

Maps used for walking for e.g are made to a scale of 1:25 000, which is more easily interpreted as 4 centimeters to 1 kilometer, or about 2 1/2 inches to 1 mile. When making a scale drawing it is necessary to decide on the scale factor to be used and indicate it clearly.

For example, in making a plan of a kitchen, a scale of 2cm to represent 1m might be appropriate.
